The Village of Moms: Celebrating Love in Action

Mother's Day reaches well past a single household. A village raises us, and to mother is to choose to show up fully, again and again and again.

The Village of Moms: Celebrating Love in Action

Mother’s Day reaches beyond a single household or family, our entire village raises us, a circle of care holds us, and a network of kindness turns strangers into neighbors. Today, I want to honor every person who mothers in our community: birth moms, chosen moms, mentors, coaches, neighbors, friends, anyone whose love helps someone else grow. I’ll share lessons from my own mom, celebrate my wife Kellie’s journey, and connect it all to my song “More Than a Word (For All the Moms)” and my book The Optimist’s Way.

A Network of Care

Wherever you call home—mothership appears in many forms:

  • New parents up at midnight learning each baby’s unique cry, chasing every small milestone because they know those moments shape a lifetime.
  • Mentors and teachers who trade an evening of rest for one more question answered, one more idea explored, because your potential matters to them.
  • Coaches who demand one extra effort, then celebrate your courage as if they scored the winning goal themselves.
  • Neighbors bringing soup when illness strikes, tending your garden while you’re away, offering a lift when schedules collide, care given without being asked.
  • Friends who hold space for your fears, your hopes, your messy middle, reminding you that vulnerability can be a source of strength.

Each gesture, large or small, builds a community where no one faces life alone. To mother means choosing, again and again, to show up fully, even when doing so asks everything of you.

Remembering My Mom

Alzheimer’s began stealing my mom’s memories about five years before she passed away. I still remember the shock of her forgetting our kids’ names, a crack in time that changed everything. Even as her recollection faded, her loving spirit and kind eyes were still there.

She taught me to spot miracles in everyday life: the beautiful rock or tree, the comfort hidden in a handwritten note, the power of a simple “I believe in you.” Now, in my role as CEO of an amazing healthcare organization, her lessons still help guide every decision: kindness requires no ledger, hope defines what comes next. Whenever I pause to admire a flower or write a quick word of encouragement, I honor her legacy.

Honoring Kellie

Kellie began as a reserved Barre instructor; she became a business owner whose confidence grows through service. Day in and day out, she balances being a mom, wiped tears, medical appointments, and whispered encouragements.

She is the calm in our storm, the laughter at day’s end, the steady hand when we need it the most. In her actions I see that love can be practiced, and practiced well, through the simplest routines. Her example reminds me daily that believing in someone else can reveal strengths they didn’t know they had.

My Song for Mothers: “More Than a Word”

This song grew out of countless conversations with moms in my life, my own mom, my wife Kellie, and the hundreds of mothers I’ve seen show up and make a difference. I wanted the melody and lyrics to feel like a warm embrace, a reminder that love is proven through action.

When I wrote this, I thought of late‑night feedings and early‑morning school runs, of whispered encouragements and quiet sacrifices. Every chord became a thank‑you note for the unseen work of motherhood.

Here’s a moment from the song that I fell in love with:

‘Cause "mom" is more than just a name, It’s kindness wrapped in everyday

It’s sleepless nights, and soft goodbyes, It’s “I’m right here” a thousand times

To every kind of heart that gives this love, This world is brighter because of you.

When I was making this song, I couldn’t help but think of Kellie balancing three kids’ schedules and still finding time to build a business or lend a hand at the school. I thought of my mom, whose gentle faith in me still guides every tough decision.

I hope when you listen, you feel seen and celebrated. You can watch the full video on YouTube here, stream it anywhere you get music, or share it with a mom who lights your world.

Hope in a Book: The Optimist’s Way

In The Optimist’s Way, I dive deep into how hope isn’t a one‑time event but a practice, something we choose in the small moments. One act of hope can spark another, just as a single kindness can start a chain reaction of compassion. That chain is the essence of motherhood: one hug inspires empathy, which spreads from person to person, strengthening families and neighborhoods alike.

In the book, you’ll find stories of choosing optimism in the face of uncertainty. Those moments mirror the acts of mothers everywhere: constant, often unseen, but powerful enough to change trajectories.

Each chapter ends with a reflection and simple prompt, because hope grows when we act. Whether you’re a mom, an aunt, a mentor, or a friend, these prompts invite you to pay forward the kindness you’ve received and watch the ripple effect in your own community..

A Community Call to Action

Let gratitude become action today—choose a few ways to make Mother’s Day real for the moms in your life and beyond:

Reach out with a note. Handwrite a letter or send a message to a mom who made a difference—share a memory of how her care uplifted you.

Offer your skills. Volunteer time or expertise—tutor a child, help with yard work, or lead a free mini‑workshop for new parents.

Cook or share a meal. Prepare a homemade dish or organize a simple potluck so busy families can rest and connect.

Childcare swap. Team up with another parent to exchange babysitting hours, giving each other a bit of time off.

Share the song. Send “More Than a Word (For All the Moms)” to a mother‑figure in your life—watch it on YouTube https://youtu.be/EJT4KLUnGpM?si=k8tsZzfMWGYii1cr or stream it on your favorite platform—and let the music express your gratitude.

Gift the book. Give The Optimist’s Way (https://a.co/d/dNnrCVr) to someone whose hope and kindness inspired you—so they know the impact they make.

To Every Mom, Everywhere

To those who carried us, who chose us, who guided us, who stepped in when we needed someone, thank you. Your daily choices create the foundation of community.

Motherhood surpasses any single word. It lives in the aroma of pancakes, the hush of lullabies, the tough conversations that build character, and the unspoken promise that someone always has your back.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mom in our community and beyond. Your love shapes our world, one caring act at a time.

I’ll send you the next one
