Four English-Vietnamese songs carry a desire for connection from the mountains of Idaho toward listeners and friends in Vietnam.
The story
Light Between Worlds grew out of a connection that crossed distance and language. I was making music in Idaho and finding out that people in Vietnam were listening. That changed the scale of what this work seemed able to do. A song made in one place had reached someone whose daily life, language, and culture were different from mine.
The album's original description talks about a journey from the mountains of Idaho to the heart of Vietnam. Its four songs stay with the emotional meaning of that journey. They are about bridges, strangers, sunrise, and talking across a great distance. The English and Vietnamese titles sit beside each other, so the translation is visible before the music starts.
The Bridge We Build opens with connection as shared work. A bridge needs people on both sides who are willing to move toward each other. Cultural exchange takes humility too. Interest only means something when it includes listening, respect, and a willingness to learn where my first assumptions fall short.
The Stranger's Song starts with unfamiliarity. The word stranger describes a relationship before people have heard each other's stories. Music opens a door, but the real connection grows out of curiosity about the person behind the song. The track carries a hope that distance gets more human once a voice has crossed it.
Rising Like the Sun is about the resilience I saw in the strength, joy, and stories of Vietnamese friends. The sunrise belongs to renewal shared across places. It also fits what it felt like to realize an audience existed on the other side of the world. Their attention gave the work a new morning.
Through the Stars We Speak closes at the widest scale on the album. The physical distance between Idaho and Vietnam is still real, and a recorded voice still travels through networks, speakers, and time zones. The song imagines that exchange as company across the night.
This project came out of an early attempt to connect cultures through music. The intention was sincere, and that intention carries responsibility. Translation, pronunciation, and musical choices deserve review from people who live inside the language and the traditions being represented. Connection gets stronger when the people I am addressing help shape how their culture appears.
Light Between Worlds asks you to share memories, dreams and moments from your own life. That invitation is the point of it. The album opens a conversation. The stories sent back across the distance finish it.
