The Optimist's Way
Album · 6 tracks · April 2025 · by Mike Baker
Six folk songs translate the ideas behind The Optimist's Way into a quiet practice of courage, attention, growth, and renewed purpose.
The story
The Optimist's Way is a companion to my book of the same name. The book asks what optimism looks like after you have lived through disappointment, grief, uncertainty, and change. These songs bring that question into a smaller emotional space. They are not a speech from a stage. They sound closer to a conversation with someone who is tired and deciding whether to try again.
I understand optimism as a practice rather than a mood. It includes the words we use on ourselves, the attention we give to ordinary moments, and the choices we make when the outcome is still uncertain. Hope matters most on the days when confidence is missing. This album stays close to those days.
Let the Light In begins with willingness. The light is available, but you have to loosen the defenses built during difficult seasons. The Quiet Kind of Brave follows with courage that does not need spectacle. Asking for help, staying gentle, telling the truth, and beginning again all belong to that quieter strength.
What You Water Will Grow turns attention into responsibility. The thoughts, relationships, habits, and fears that get repeated care become stronger. The song asks you to notice where your energy is going and whether that investment supports the life you want to build.
Still Here, Still Trying is the album's most grounded statement of persistence. Staying present does not require a triumphant ending. Sometimes the honest achievement is that you came back to the work, the relationship, or the day. The title now also connects this album to the Still Here, Still Trying podcast, where that unfinished stance has room to continue through conversation.
The Optimist's Way gathers the book's ideas into a central song about purpose, hope, and light. It treats optimism as courage informed by experience. A New Day's Whisper closes without a grand declaration. Morning arrives quietly, and the future begins as an invitation rather than a guarantee.
This album belongs to the wider connection among my writing, my music, and my public conversations. A book gives an idea room to develop. A song gives it rhythm and emotional memory. A podcast gives the unfinished questions time to breathe. Together they let the same work meet people through different doors.

The closer offers renewal in a restrained voice, leaving the listener with possibility that feels gentle enough to trust.

Where it leads
The Optimist's Way brought Mike's book, music, and emerging public conversations into one body of work. The next part of the catalog would keep exploring meaning, resilience, identity, and the stories people use to find their way forward.
